Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts lends Paintings to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

 René Magritte, Le Conquerant

René Magritte, Decouverte de Feu

(Greenwich, CT) Chalk and Vermilion Fine Arts, publisher of such artists as Erté, Liudmila Kondakova, Kerry Hallam, Philippe Bertho and many others, is lending two important works by Belgium surrealist artist René Magritte to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the upcoming exhibition “Magritte and Contemporary Art: The Treachery of Images.” The two paintings, “Le Conquerant” and “Decouverte de Feu” are part of the fine art collection of David and Leslee Rogath, owners of Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts and Martin Lawrence Galleries.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s exhibition on this extraordinary artist feature works which examine the painter’s signature style, beloved for its irony and unsettling psychological edge, against a more contemporary sensibility. An installation has been designed and is intended to turn visitors’ experience upside down. The entrance re-creates “The Unexpected Answer”, a Magritte painting of a door with a cutout silhouette of a ghostly figure. Visitors walk through the open silhouette into galleries carpeted with a woven version of a Magritte-style blue sky with fluffy white clouds. The ceiling, where the sky should be, is papered with images of freeway intersections. A large square window is covered with a transparency of a New York skyline and the guards are wearing derby hats. This is not the usual Magritte exhibition, but it is inspired by works that contain an extraordinary juxtaposition of ordinary objects or an unusual context giving new meaning to familiar things – in other words, Surrealism.
The work of René Magritte is part of the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including the Tate Gallery, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., The Arts Institute, Chicago, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Staatsgalerie moderner Kunst, Munich, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, and Kunsthaus, Zurich.
In recent years, Chalk & Vermilion owners David and Leslee Rogath have loaned art by such artists as Pablo Picasso, Sam Francis, Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, and Marc Chagall to prestigious museums around the world including Barcelona’s Museu Picasso, the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum, the Las Vegas Art Museum, and many others. Loans of works by René Magritte have been made to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels in the artist’s native country.
“Magritte and Contemporary Art: The Treachery of Images”, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will open on Sunday, November 26th, 2006.
